Grupo Energía de Bogotá promotes the use of clean energies

18 August 2017

Bogotá D.C. August 18, 2017. Through its new strategy, Grupo Energía de Bogotá (GEB) seeks to address the upcoming changes in the energy and natural gas sector by expanding its range of services to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life of citizens by breathing less polluted air.

To this end, GEB has been promoting the use of clean energy with a commitment to electric mobility and the mass use of natural gas vehicles, a strategy that has been developed mainly in Lima and Bogota.

In Lima, gas stations and refueling stations for buses and cars are being installed. It has engaged a fleet of 600 buses of the Metropolitan (the mass transport system of this capital) and more than 225.000 cars have already been converted and are supplied in the 240 stations of Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV). In this city, the use of this fuel has a 12 percent penetration.

Likewise, recently, Cálidda, a GEB company in Peru, launched the campaign "Quality of life is breathed" that took place in the Metropolitan's central station and seeks to generate awareness about the care of the air that is breathed in Lima and to show how pollution affects people's health.

It should be noted that in Peru, GEB, through Cálidda and Contugas, handles 71 percent of the natural gas supply.

In Bogota, on the other hand, there are more than 32.000 vehicles that move with NGV. In addition, it participates actively in the regulation to prepare the city for a new generation of electric and natural gas buses.

Similarly, efforts are being made in this city to encourage transportation by NGV, which is why the International Gas Transport Company (TGI), a GEB company, as well as Ecopetrol and Gas Natural Fenosa (a company in which the Group has a 25% participation) joined forces and signed an agreement with the purpose of encouraging the use of this fuel in mass transport vehicles.

Astrid Álvarez, CEO of GEB, highlighted that "from the Group we are promoting mass transport solutions, helping to reduce emission levels and improving the quality of life, and thus we are looking for new opportunities in cleaner energies that are at the forefront of the transformation of cities".

Another example of its commitment to the environment and the reduction of its carbon footprint is that GEB currently has 56 highly efficient solar panels at its headquarters, which have generated savings in C02, equivalent to 625 trees since its installation in 2015.

With all this work, the Group will seek to consolidate itself as a strategic connector in the modernization of public services to live in a more sustainable city and expand best practices to the main Latin American cities. Some European countries are leaders in these issues, one of which is Norway, which has the highest number of electric vehicles per inhabitant in the world and has set itself the goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2030.
