UN Private Sector Fourn 2011 "Sustainable Energy for All"

Bogotá, 21September 2011-. With the participation of Mrs. Mónica de Greiff, CEO of Grupo Energía de Bogotá  and member of the Board of UN Global Compact, within the frame of the Annual UN Assembly held in New York, the UN Private Sector Forum, which gathers the highest levels of the public and private sector with the intention of fostering world collaboration to face global challenges in environmental issues.

Chaired by UN General Secretary, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, the Forum summoned in this occasion 300 Chief of States and Governments, entrepreneurs, civil society leaders and UN agencies' chiefs, who will explore mechanisms and good business practices regarding the generation of sources and application of Sustainable Energy.

By participating in this Forum, Mrs. Mónica de Greiff, who was part of table 5 on electricity, ratifies the decision made by Grupo Energía de Bogotá to make corporate responsibility principle a substantial asset on the way companies operate in each organization as a comprehensive part thereof and consolidate efforts to drive UN Global Compact in Colombia and the region.

The meeting in New York seeks, in this opportunity to engage governments, private sectors and civil society to achieve three large goals for 2030:

  • Achieve universal access to modern energy;
  • Improve energy efficiency;
  • Increase energy quota generated from renewable resources. 

Thus, the objective it to have in place an Action Framework that involves the private and public sectors in the development of a world agenda for sustainable development. This framework will also help as a practical guide both for identifying the roles of companies in 2030 goals as well as for the definition of guidelines in the UN Conference for Sustainable Development that will take place in 2012.

This Action Framework that will be defined in this Forum seeks to identify how different sectors may carry out high impact actions in support and achieving 2030 goal, both individually as well as with the support of other companies, organizations, either public or private. 

As part of the Forum dynamics, it seeks to optimize the interaction among attendees, all of them will seat at different work tables that will summon 10 entrepreneurial leaders, civil society, government and UN, who will conduct a debate on access to electricity, access to modern kitchen devices and fuels to cook and heat, renewable energies, efficiency and energy safety.

The following persons also attended the Forum: Silvio Ponti Dipl. Bau-Ing. ETH, MBA, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Regional Manager of Europe North, and Adolfo Heeren, Gerente de Cálidda, empresa del Grupo Energía de Bogotá.
