13 September 2017

  • With works for the beautification of the population, music and leisure activities, the Energy Group of Bogotá (GEB) joins the festival of El Dorado and celebrations for the 50 years of Guatavita La Nueva.

Bogotá D.C., September 13th, 2017. 57 kilometers from Bogotá, there is Guatavita, one of the most beautiful municipalities in Cundinamarca and in the country. This week it dresses up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its rebirth, surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes and framed by the Tominé reservoir. From September 11th to 17th, cultural and recreational activities will be carried out to highlight the growth and progress of this population, which was born five decades ago after the old town was flooded by the waters of the reservoir on September 15th, 1967. The move of the new town began in November of that year giving life to this picturesque municipality that today has 7,000 inhabitants distributed in 15 trails.

Since then, Guatavita La Nueva emerged as one of the main tourist destinations of the department thanks to its landscapes, its gastronomy, its colonial architecture and the nautical sports that are practiced in Tominé, a reservoir of 18 kilometers of extension that includes the municipalities of Sesquilé and Guatavita, and which is part of the water system of the Bogota savanna.

Today, the municipality is preparing everything to celebrate its golden wedding and to hold the twenty-eighth Festival of El Dorado - in reference to the muisca legend of the same name.

Grupo Energía de Bogotá (GEB), committed to the development of the region, is enthusiastically and energetically involved in these activities. The takeover of Guatavita La Nueva by the GEB includes the painting of houses and establishments of the municipality by the volunteers, formed by employees of the company who moved to this municipality on Tuesday, September 12 for its beautification. Volunteering is made up of about 40 employees who donate part of their time in programs such as those held in this municipality.

Additionally, on the 15th and 16th of this month, company officials, led by its president Astrid Álvarez, will join in the celebrations with the delivery of a giant birthday punch for the inhabitants of the town and the Idipron Orchestra (Instituto Distrital for Protection and Children and Youth), formed by young talents who are in the process of rehabilitation after having lived for years in the streets of Bogota.

“We are happy to participate in the celebration of 50 years of Guatavita, a municipality that we have in the heart and in which we have presence for many years. From the Energy Group of Bogotá we are committed to its development and for this reason we want to give this population Tominé Park, the dream of all”,states Álvarez.

The mayor of Guatavita, Robeth Yamit Peña, highlighted the support of the GEB to the municipality to point out that one of the first works was the construction of the obelisk. "This has been a joint effort between the Mayor and the Energy Group of Bogotá that has among its plans the development of the park Tominé," says Peña, who points out that tourism is precisely one of the main economic areas of the municipality. In this town you can do not only nautical activities but also horseback riding, outdoor walks and buy handicrafts. That is why they see a new impetus to the region in the new project.
