Bogota. D.C., September 13, 2017. In 2016, el Grupo Energía de Bogotá (GEB) set a new sustainability policy for the development of socioeconomic impact projects aiming to positively transform the areas where it operates.

For this purpose, social responsibility programs are being strengthened not only in Colombia but also in the other Latin American countries where the Group is present, including Peru, Brazil and Guatemala, to the benefit of the most vulnerable population. In this regard, the Group is developing community and education and nutrition support activities.

One great example is Guatemala –where the Group came to in 2009. It is conducted –through its company Transportadora de Energía de Centroamérica (Trecsa) – the most ambitious energy expansion plan in Central America to electrify the most distant and the poorest areas in the country.

In Guatemala, the Group has invested roughly USD1,700 m in 185 community projects benefiting more than 34,000 families. These programs include the construction of education and community centers, classroom, roof, restroom and kitchen repairs. In these 185 projects, 35% are for education centers, 29% for public space improvement, 11% for community centers, and another 11% for home matters.

In Peru, GEB, through Cálidda and Contugas, has developed the soup kitchen program, ran by mothers from the community, who provide a balanced diet to children and youngsters in vulnerable areas. These companies provide free natural gas to soup kitchens, benefiting over 55,000 individuals –a project recognized by the Peruvian President, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

Astrid Álvarez, CEO of GEB, highlights these initiatives holding that, in the case of Peru, gas access has become a true social revolution.

“We want to generate positive transforming impact across territories where we operate, as well as shared value that will help improve living conditions in communities. In our Group, this has become a cultural thing, with employees becoming increasingly willing to be part of these initiatives by which they are contributing to a better society”, she said.

In Colombia, el GEB is developing various social responsibility initiatives on several fronts, including as follows:

-       “Unidos con Energía” Volunteers: This program supports the Institute for Child and Youth Protection (IDIPRON, acronym in Spanish) in different leisure-recreational activities for the children’s and youth’s well-being. GEB and IDIPRON have entered into an agreement to join forces and develop specific support activities to the benefit of children, adolescents and young individuals in street situation served by the Institute. Also, these volunteers –composed of over 40 company employees– periodically develop embellishment activities in neighboring parks and municipalities, such as Guatavita, where this week they had the Parish House painted for the celebration of Guatativa’s 50 years.

-       “Energía para la Paz”:This initiative will be developed around the Tesalia – Alférez transmission line, which is under construction in the departments of Huila, Tolima and Valle del Cauca. A demining program will be implemented in this territory –previously affected by the conflict– which will restore peace for families in the area.

-       Education and roads in GEB’s areas of influence: In the areas of influence of operating infrastructure, activities have been developed to the benefit of communities, such as maintenance on settlement roads, and pedagogical materials provided to more than 2,800 children in rural schools. Likewise, an eco-efficient cooking solution program will be implemented, which will improve health conditions for dozens of families.

-       Tominé Project: This project will have an environmental space improved for the Bogota people and the region population generally to enjoy and see nature. This is a dream that will be integrated into a large environmental network for Bogota.
