Grupo Energía de Bogotá presents “Energy for Peace” initiative in the Macro-Round for Reconciliation

30 November 2016

Bogotá D.C., November 30, 2016. Grupo Energía de Bogotá (GEB) takes part in the Macro-Round for Reconciliation taking place in Cali, in which the Group will present an initiative called “Energy for Peace” topublic and private stakeholders and civil society working to consolidate peace territories in Colombia.  The Group's participation in this venue is purported to find strategic partners concerned with the development of this project.

“Energy for Peace” is an initiative that emerges from the electric energy transmission project UPME 05 of 2009 Tesalia - Alférez carried out by GEB in the south of the country and consists of an operational and humanitarian deminingin the neighboring areas of the easement corridor of the energy transmission line, including also the development of habitat banks to improve and maintain the values of biodiversity, and training courses for work that will bring employment opportunities for the families living in the area of influence of the project.

In addition, four fundamental domains will be addressed to contribute to the development of the area: Preserving biodiversity, consolidating peace territories, creating opportunities for young people living in rural areas and building a genuine relationship with our groups of interest based on the social and environmental development and the recovery of territories for the people.

With this initiative, Grupo Energía de Bogotá will have a positiveimpact on the departments of Huila, Tolima and Valle del Cauca. The project, due to its geographic location, offers two big opportunities: Recovery of territories with medium to high risks of presence of land mines and the execution of environmental compensation measures of the project.

As from the construction and operation of this project of national interest, Tesalia - Alférez, the areas recovered and environmental compensations, will prompt these territories to contribute to sustainable development and peace consolidation, strengthening the communities in the area of influence on the grounds of genuine relations and the generation of shared values through opportunities to provide environmental services.

The UPME Project UPME 05 of 2009 Tesalia – Alférez allows for connecting the hydroelectric central of El Quimbo in Huila, while contributing to the National Interconnection System  - SIN. Also, the project will enable the connection between Huila and the Southwest region of the country, improving service conditions, mainly in the departments of Huila, Tolima and Valle del Cauca, creating benefits for the communities of eleven municipalities of these departments, including communities remotely located in the municipalities of Rioblanco and Planada (Tolima) and Pradera (Valle del Cauca), adjacent to Cañón de las Hermosas, a place historically affected by armed conflict.

The Macro-Round for Reconciliation is a venue for sharing knowledge and resources oriented towards supporting reconciliation projects promoted by organizations, leaders and foundations that give top priority to supporting the reconstruction of the social fabric of the country and her territories.
