21 February 2017

  • GEB works on promoting the use of NGV in public transport systems of Colombia.
  • In Lima, 100% of public transport runs on NGV. GEB has been a main promoter of the system’s transformation.

Bogota, February 21, 2017. As part of its commitment to using cleaner energies, Grupo Energia de Bogota is betting on the use of Natural Gas for Vehicles (NGV) in the public transport systems of the countries where it operates. The utilization of natural gas in the transport sector enables a 90% to 97% decrease of carbon monoxide compared to other fuels.

At present in Lima, Calidda (a Grupo Energia de Bogota company) is the market leader in Natural Gas distribution and supplies the 240 NGV stations that exist in the city. 100% of public transport vehicles work with NGV since 2010 in the Peruvian capital. In regards to private transport, more than 225.000 cars in Lima have been converted to this technology.

In Colombia, GEB is the market leader in natural gas transportation through its company TGI, and supplies large cities like Bogota, Medellin and Cali. At present, it works in partnership with Ecopetrol and Gas Natural Fenosa, a company in which GEB has a shareholding of 25%, to encourage the use of NGV in the country’s mass transport systems. Currently, these companies have natural gas supply and transportation special contracts for the mass public transport system that allow for supply reliability and price stability during buses’ service life.

“The use of natural gas in the Mass Transport Systems must be a priority to guarantee the sustainable development of large cities like Bogota. Our mission as Business Group is to drive the use of this resource, which is cleaner and more energy-efficient, based on the experience that we have had in Peru,” indicated Astrid Alvarez, president of Grupo Energia de Bogota.

The bid placed by Grupo Energia de Bogota is to support the use of natural gas in the public transport system of cities like Bogota. The utilization of NGV in a mass public transport system represents a 31% decrease in fuel cost together with the maintenance cost reduction compared to diesel or LPG, which would generate significant savings for end users as well as great environmental benefits. In the country’s capital there is a natural gas network availability that exceeds 95%.

Currently, Bogota has 171 NGV stations and, by 2028, it hopes to have 30% of the public transport fleet running on NGV.
