- The new project is geared to strengthen the capacity of the regional transmission electricity network in the departments of Tolima, Huila and Caquetá
- GEB is one of the leaders in the development of electric energy transmission projects in Colombia. This segment records remarkable levels of growth over the last years.
August 28, 2017. The UPME 05-2017 Bid for the Regional Transmission System (STR in Spanish) has been awarded to Grupo Energía de Bogotá (GEB) by the Unit of Energy and Mining Planning (UPME in Spanish). This system will allow for improving service quality in the departments of Tolima, Huila and Caquetá.
The projects comprises the construction of the second transformer of the Altamira Substation located in Huila, with the purpose of reducing the problems related to low-voltage and overload, and also to improve the conditions of service delivery and reliability, which, in sum, will decrease the risk of an energy shortage. In this way, it will be easier to tackle economic growth and the prosperity of the region for the better.
For Astrid Álvarez, the President of Grupo Energía de Bogotá,“the awarding of this new project is an evidence of the great experience that the Group has in the execution of large projects in the field of energy transmission, which directly affect the quality of life of the population, therefore GEB will continue in its endeavor to widespread development and progress throughout Colombia”.
Likewise, the president claims that this project will be developed within the framework of the new Corporate Strategic Plan, by means of the Interconnection for Markets Development group, which is in charge of connecting energy sources with large consumption centers and users.
In this way, the Group consolidates as one of the leaders in the development and execution of new expansion projects in electric energy transmission in Colombia, with a sustained growth during the last years, so the Group expects to double its presence in transmission networks across the country by 2020.
In addition to this project, GEB is currently developing 12 new projects to strengthen the electric energy transmission system in Colombia, out of the 12 projects, 10 has been awarded by the UPME and two by important clients such as Ecopetrol and Drummond. Therefore, GEB continues to consolidate as the second most relevant actor in the electric energy transmission market, carrying out business activities aimed to transform the lands where it operates in a positive and sustainable way.
GEB expansion projects
- UPME Projects
UPME Project 02 – 2009 Armenia 230 kV:will improve the electric interconnection in the Colombian coffee region. Target areas are Caldas, Quindío and Risaralda.
UPME Project 03 – 2009 North 230 kV:will reduce the risk of energy shortage in the Eastern Area (Cundinamarca, Bogotá, Meta, part of Tolima), reducing any possible failures in the system.
UPME Project 04 – 2014 Southwest Reinforcement 500 kV:will strengthen the transmission of electric energy in the south of the country. The target area of the project extends over the southwest region of Colombia, specifically the departments of Antioquia, Caldas, Risaralda and Valle del Cauca.
UPME Project 06 – 2014 Córdoba River 220 kV:will increase reliability conditions and will reduce the risk of energy shortage in the Atlantic Coast.
UPME Project STR 07 – 2014 Córdoba River Transformer 220/110 kV:will extend the transformation capacity of the Magdalena area, thus improving the conditions of service delivery and reliability, while reducing the risk of energy shortage in Magdalena.
UPME Project 05 – 2013 Cartagena – Bolívar Road 220 kV:will increase the energy transport capacity towards the Caribbean area, mainly to the department of Bolivar. The project goes through urban and rural zones in the municipalities of Cartagena, Turbaco and Santa Rosa de Lima.
PUME Project – 01 – 2013 First Reinforcement in the Eastern Area 500 kV Sogamoso – North – Nva Esperanza 500 kV:will reduce the risk of electric shortage and will increase the electric energy system reliability in the departments of Cundinamarca, including District Capital, Meta and Tolima.
UPME Project 01 – 2014 La Loma 500 kV and UPME STR -13 2015 La Loma 110 kV:These two projects will improve the quality and reliability in the conditions of electric energy service in the department of Cesar. Thus, reducing the risk of energy shortage and extending the transformation capacity of the area by contributing to reduce operating costs related to the electric energy service in the country.
UPME Project 05 – 2009 Tesalia – Alférez 230 kV:will connect the hydroelectric power plant in El Quimbro, Huila, and will allow the connection between Huila and the South West of the country, improving the conditions of service, mainly for the departments of Huila, Tolima and Valle del Cauca.
- Projects for important clients
- Connection Project for Puerto Drummond:will provide a reliable electric connection for Puerto Drummond.
- Interconnection La Reforma – San Fernando Project:will improve the supply of energy to the department of Meta in order to cater for the internal demand of the region and strengthen the connection of the Regional Transmission System (STR). Likewise, the project will guarantee the quality and reliability of the National Transmission System (STN) in the department, thus allowing the connection of Castilla and Chichimene oil field from Ecopetrol to STN.
Infrastructure in process
The company has over 1,504 km of circuits at 230 kV active in 18 substations, and one Reactive Power Static Compensator (SVC in Spanish) that strengthen the conditions of service in the eastern zone of the country, including the Capital District. The active substations are located throughout the Colombian territory, specifically in the departments of Cundinamarca, Bolívar, Meta, Valle el Cauca, Cauca, Huila, Putumayo and Nariño.
